Workspaces

The nine workspaces in NVS - what each shows and when to use it.

Workspaces

NVS organizes its panels into nine workspaces, switched from the left rail. Each workspace replaces the sidebar and main content with a focused view. The rails stay fixed throughout.

The workspaces are grouped by what produces them:

Author workspaces

These are surfaces you write and edit directly. Changes here update files on disk.

Editor

The primary writing surface. The sidebar shows the scene tree (chapters and scenes); the main area is the page editor with the block toolbar. This is where you spend most of your time.

Keyboard shortcut to save: ⌘S / Ctrl+S.

World

The world bible. The sidebar lists your world pages by kind (characters, locations, items, lore, information). Click any page to open it in the editor. Add a new page by hovering a group and clicking +.

Each world page has a Preview tab (the wiki panel) and a Source tab (the raw Markdown an agent reads).

Custody

The information and object chain. Each custody page tracks a single secret or physical item through the story - who holds it, who learns it, and when the reader finds out. The Custody workspace shows authored timelines you maintain by hand.

Derived workspaces

These are read from your scenes automatically. No configuration needed - they update whenever you save.

Timeline

A canvas that shows your scenes laid out in story order. Use it to see pacing - where the action clusters, where the lulls are, whether a subplot goes quiet for too long.

Cast

Who appears in each scene. Useful for ensemble casts and rotating POVs - catch a character being in two places at once, or a character who vanishes from the story without explanation.

Relations

A graph of character relationships derived from co-occurrence in scenes. Shows who shares the most scenes with whom and lets you spot isolated characters.

Analysis workspaces

These run after the engine has processed your scenes. They surface patterns and problems.

Threads

The thread ledger - plot lines, promises, and questions the reader is holding. Each thread is tracked from its opening scene through any advances to its resolution (or lack of one). Use this workspace to see which threads are alive and where they last moved.

Coherence

Findings from the analysis: contradictions between declared character facts and what the scenes show, threads that went quiet for too long, reveals that landed before their setup. Findings are signals, not commands - you decide what to act on.

Analysis workspaces require an AI model to be configured. Deterministic features (cast, timeline, relations) work with no API key.

Corkboard

A freeform card canvas for ideas that are not scenes yet. Cards carry a title, notes, and optional character chips, and connect to each other freely. Multiple boards per project.

See Corkboard.
