The four AI surfaces, what each is for, and the rule they all obey.
AI Layout
AI in NVS is opt-in, runs on a key you supply, and never edits your files without you saying yes.
That last clause is the design, not a disclaimer. Every surface below proposes; you dispose.

The rule
Nothing an AI suggests reaches your prose on its own. A proposed change becomes a task you open, read, and accept or discard. There is no autosave path from a model into your manuscript, which is why turning AI on is not a risk to work you have already done.
Turning AI off does not turn the app off. Cast presence, timing, structure, and the story tree are computed deterministically with no key, no network, and no model.
